The flag of Vatican City, also known as the Papal or flag of the Holy See, consists of vertical bicolour of yellow and white, with the white half containing the emblem of the Holy See, a papal tiara and the crossed keys of Saint Peter. 

The white colour stands for purity, and yellow (gold) stands for divine splendour. The two crossed keys, one gold and one silver, symbolize the Keys of the Kingdom of Heaven granted to Saint Peter by Jesus. The gold key represents spiritual power, while the silver key represents worldly authority. They are tied together with a red cord. 

The flag was adopted in 1929, the year Pope Pius XI signed the Lateran Treaty with Italy, creating the new independent state of Vatican City.
