International Women's Day or IWD is celebrated globally on March 8 and is a focal point in the women's rights movement. The day gives focus to gender equality, reproductive rights, and violence and abuse against women. Spurred by the universal female suffrage movement, IWD originated from labour movements in North America and Europe during the early 20th century.
